CDN stands for Content Delivery Network, and refers to a network that is optimized for distribution of web content over the Internet.
In recent years, it has been common for websites to receive sudden, unexpected surges in web traffic due to links from major portal sites or joint promotions with other forms of media. If the web content is being distributed from a single source, the servers and networks can become overloaded. For the end-user, this often results in inferior experiences ranging from slow connections to being unable to view the content, and sometimes being unable to connect to the website altogether.
